Network for Security Excellence and Collaboration (NSEC)
The Network for Security Excellence and Collaboration (NSEC) is a national network that brings together academics, policymakers, industry and the third sector to support collaboration on the UK’s most pressing security and resilience challenges.

NSEC operates within SALIENT — the Building a Secure and Resilient World Research and Coordination Hub, part of the Thomas Ashton Institute at The University of Manchester. Through SALIENT, NSEC supports interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and partnership working across the UK’s security and resilience landscape.
The network provides a platform for:
- researchers seeking to collaborate across disciplines and institutions
- government departments and agencies looking to engage with academic expertise
- industry and third sector organisations interested in research‑informed innovation
NSEC focuses on enabling effective coordination, strengthening connections between communities, and accelerating collaboration to deliver meaningful impact for national security and resilience.
NSEC plays a key role in supporting SALIENT’s mission to grow collaboration, inform policy, and strengthen the UK’s security and resilience through interdisciplinary research and coordination.
NSEC is supported by Dr Dionysios Demetis and Natalie Poole, who provide coordination and project management support. NSEC retains a government sponsor in Annette Southgate who leads the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE).
