Web accessibility statement

This statement applies to the SALIENT website at www.salient-hub.org, which is run by the University of Manchester. The University’s central website has its own web accessibility statement.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. We follow general principles of usability and universal design, and aim to meet level 2 (AA) of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.

What you can do on this website

  • use a “Skip to content” link to go straight to the main content
  • zoom in without losing content or needing to scroll sideways on a small screen
  • find your way around using headings, page regions and a labelled search box
  • open the main menu’s sub-menus using buttons, rather than hover-only menus
  • use the site on desktop and mobile devices

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible. For example:

  • some images that carry information, such as the graphic of work package icons on the home page, do not have text alternatives
  • the SALIENT logo link in the page header and some links on the Our People page have no accessible name
  • some headings are not marked up as headings, and some pages skip heading levels
  • some PDF documents, including process flowcharts, may not be accessible to screen reader software
  • some videos embedded from YouTube may not have captions or transcripts

Please see the technical information below for more detail.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The University of Manchester is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the accessibility regulations.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the WCAG 2.2 AA standard, due to the instances of non-compliance and exceptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some images that convey information have empty alt text, so people using a screen reader cannot access that information (WCAG 1.1.1).
  • Some headings are formatted as bold text rather than marked up as headings, and some pages skip heading levels or have more than one main heading (WCAG 1.3.1).
  • Some PDF documents, including the Application Process and Peer Review flowcharts, may not be accessible to screen readers (WCAG 4.1.2).
  • Some embedded YouTube videos may not have captions or transcripts (WCAG 1.2.2).

We are working to fix these issues.

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Third-party content: We link to documents hosted by other organisations, such as UKRI and GOV.UK, and to social media accounts. We are responsible for the content we produce, but we have no control over the accessibility of these external sites and documents.
  • Maps: We link to the University’s interactive campus map, which may not be fully accessible. Our address is given in text on the home page.

How we tested this website

[Replace with your actual testing, for example: “In October 2026 the website was reviewed using automated checks and manual checks of the home page and main sections, including headings, links, images, page structure, colour contrast and zooming to a narrow screen width.” Add any screen reader or keyboard testing only once it has been done.]

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are working to correct the issues listed above, including adding alt text and link names, fixing heading structure and improving our PDFs. Content editors follow University guidance on creating accessible content.
